What is Zinc Pyrithione?

Zinc pyrithione, or ZPT, is an ingredient that has anti-fungi and antibacterial properties.

This ingredient has been used in cosmetic products for more than 50 years in which extensive research and efficacy optimization has been achieved.

ZPT is used in the new Safeguard formulation as it offers unparalleled protection between washes against multiple types of bacteria and fungi.

The use of ZPT in our products is safe

At P&G, consumer safety is our utmost priority. The safety of ZPT in cosmetics has been confirmed at multiple occasions by global safety authorities. In the US and China, recent assessments (OTC monograph by the US FDA and the China Cosmetic Restricted lists) respectively approved ZPT in shampoos up to 2 and 1.5%. In Europe, EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) confirmed the safe use of ZPT in cosmetics as recently as 2014.

ZPT offers unparalleled protection in our antibacterial soaps

Hear the experts on the efficacy of ZPT in anti-dandruff shampoos:

“It has been shown that ZPT can kill escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, candida albicans and other pathogenic bacteria and fungus. Compared with traditional antibacterial ingredients, ZPT can be used at lower concentrations, and it can remain on the surface of the skin, playing lasting antibacterial effects after cleaning and inhibiting the regeneration of pathogenic microorganisms; therefore, it has broad application prospects in personal cleansing products.”

CMDA report of China AB Personal Cleansing

“ZPT is uniquely effective in its ability to inhibit germ regrowth. This is valuable because the quality of germ transfer depends on not just the potency (virality) of the germ but the number of germs transferred. So products that contain ZPT can reduce the number of germs transferred which can help reduce transmission of disease.”
